the unexpected benefits of the epidemic for the environment

Relief will most likely be momentary. And its cause is fundamentally bad news. But one of the unexpected consequences of the coronavirus outbreak has been cleaner air and reduced emissions of gases that affect climate change.

The closure of factories and shops in China, together with the travel restrictions imposed to face the covid-19 epidemic, has resulted in a decrease in substances in the consumption of fossil fuels in the Asian country.

And that has produced a drop of at least 25% in its carbon dioxide emissions, according to calculations by Lauri Myllyvirta, from the Center for Research in Energy and Clean Air (CREA), based in the United States.

"Electricity demand and industrial production (in China) remain well below their usual levels, according to various indicators," Myllyvirta said in an analysis published on the specialized portal Carbon Brief last week.

"This is likely to have eliminated a quarter or more of the country's CO2 emissions in the two weeks following the Chinese New Year holiday, the period when activity will normally resume," the expert said at the time.
